Abbey Professor Named ‘Educator of the Year’
BELMONT, NC February 16, 2004--Belmont Abbey College’s Dr. James Giermanski has been named by the North American Small Business International Trade Educators (NASBITE) as its 2004 International Trade Educator of the Year. Giermanski will receive his award during NASBITE’s 17th annual conference in Las Vegas, Nevada on March 31-April 3, 2004.
“Belmont Abbey College and its International Business Program has certainly benefited from Dr. Giermanski’s expertise in business and international trade,” says Dr. Dean de la Motte, academic dean at Belmont Abbey. “We are proud of his efforts and his well-deserved selection for NASBITE’s International Trade Educator of the Year award.”
Each year, NASBITE selects one outstanding educator who demonstrates excellence in the field of international business training and education. The organization also recognizes outstanding and innovative developments in the area of international trade education, counseling, training and research with its annual Program Excellence Awards and International Trade Educator of the Year Award.
Previous awardees include JuDee Benton, Merced, California (2002); Carol Conway, Southern Growth Policies Board (2001); Eddie M. Lewis, University of Southern Mississippi (2000), Sarah T. Beaton, U.S. Department of Education (1999); Susanna C. Easton, U.S. Department of Education (1998); Amy Anderson, Wright State University (1997); and S. Tamer Cavusgil, Michigan State University (1996).
Wright State University serves as the host institution for NASBITE, which is part of the Division of Community Programs within the Raj Soin College of Business.
NASBITE is a membership organization that facilitates the exchange of information among those involved in international trade education, provides professional development for those involved in small business international trade education. The group also provides advocacy and leadership for international trade education professionals through establishing linkages and working relationships with public and private sector organizations.
Giermanski, a retired colonel from the Office of Special Investigations of the United States Air Force, earned a Bachelor of Arts degree from Belmont Abbey College, M.Ed. from the University of North Carolina-Charlotte, M.I.B. from Florida International University, and a Doctor of Arts, University of Miami.
A former Regents Professor at Texas A&M International University, Giermanski currently serves as a professor and director of international business studies at Belmont Abbey College. He is a member of the International Practice Analysis Committee of the NASBITE Task Force developing a national International Trade Specialist Certificate, through the Professional Examination Service (PES) and Bradley University. He also served as director Transportation and Logistics Studies, The Center for the Study of Western Hemispheric Trade, Texas A&M International University.
A former co-chairman of the Texas Transportation Committee of the Task Force to prepare for NAFTA, Giermanski has also served as a member of the Texas Office of the Attorney General’s Transborder Trucking International Working Group and the Research Advisory Committee on Management and Policy, Technical Advisory Panel, Texas Department of Transportation.
Giermanski often serves as a consultant on international transportation, border logistics, and trade matters involving Mexico. He has frequently been invited to testify before the U.S. Senate and House, the Texas Senate and House, the EPA, and the U.S. International Trade Commission. He recently assisted the Arizona Department of Transportation in improving border crossing activities in the Port of Nogales.
The author of over 85 articles, books, and monographs, Giermanski has been published extensively on transportation and trade issues. For five years he wrote the International Insight column in Logistics Management and has also been published in the Journal of Commerce, El Financiero, Traffic World, Strategic Finance, Transport Topics and Tax Notes International.
Giermanski has been interviewed by over 40 national and international publications, including The Wall Street Journal, The New York Times, Forbes Magazine, The Financial Times, Christian Science Monitor. He has also appeared on the FOX News Channel, CNN, NBC, CBS, NPR, BBC, Voice of America and the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation, along with many local and regional news affiliates.
