The University of Pacific Announce Accelerated Master’s Degree

Monterey, CA February 23, 2004 -- The University of the Pacific’s School of International Studies (SIS) and The Monterey Institute of International Studies’ Graduate School of International Policy Studies have announced a three-semester, accelerated Master’s Degree for all students completing an undergraduate degree in International Relations at The University of the Pacific, who qualify for admission to the Monterey Institute.

The accelerated Master’s Degree program is available to University of the Pacific School of International Relations graduates starting this Fall 2004. The two schools have developed the accelerated Masters program to efficiently train more students for the growing demand for international policy and international relations professionals in the business, government, and nonprofit sectors. There is an increase in demand for qualified graduates from corporations and the government as the global economy has gained momentum in both Asia and Europe.

“The University of the Pacific School of International Studies is uniquely positioned to feed our Graduate School because it is the only international studies program that requires its undergraduates to study abroad,” said Amy Sands, Dean of the Monterey Institute’s Graduate School of International Policy Studies. “The study abroad experience enables UOP SIS graduates to easily integrate with the Monterey Institute’s graduate student body, 34% of whom are highly-talented internationals from over 60 countries.

“We are pleased to partner with The Monterey Institute because it is one of the premiere international relations schools the United States,” said Margee Ensign, Dean at The University of the Pacific School of International Studies. “We view this as the next step in aligning our two schools to educate and train professionals who can lead corporations and governments towards cooperation in a dynamic global world”.

Graduates of The Monterey Institute’s Graduate School of International Policy work for prestigious organizations around the world, including the following: Government, The U.S. Information Agency, The Central Intelligence Agency, Development Bank of Africa, and Ministry of Foreign Affairs Thailand; Corporations, American Express, Goldman Sachs Hong Kong, Samsung Korea, Drake International Singapore; Nonprofits, Amnesty International Japan, Arms Control Association Washington D.C., Greenpeace, and Migrant Health Service Australia. A full list of employers is available at (www.miis.edu/gsips-career-employers.html).

As the global economy rebounds, both schools are experiencing increased applications for the 2004-2005 school year. The University of Pacific School of International studies applications doubled over last year. Similarly, The Monterey Institute’s Graduate School of International Policy Studies had a 56% increase in new student fall 2003 enrollment.
