May 11, 2004--"SAFE COMPUTING FOR THE COLLEGE BOUND" by Author Dan Appleman, Gives Computer Guidance to Graduating Seniors

Teens in our society are at the leading edge of technology. They own the best computers at home, spend most of their time on the internet, and are usually more tech savvy than their teachers and parents. But what about a first time college student? Universities today are so technologically advanced, almost every student needs a computer that is up to date and they can count on for research, term papers, and email.

"SAFE COMPUTING FOR THE COLLEGE BOUND" a new e-book by author Dan Appleman answers questions such as, What computer should I buy? Should I get a notebook or desktop computer? How do I protect my computer from viruses? How will I connect to the university network? He offers practical advice in a concise, easy to read format.

"Universities have been plagued by viruses and other security problems, and have instituted new rules and requirements for incoming students," said Appleman. "This book is designed to not only help students choose the right computer for their needs, but to make it painless for them to take full advantage of their college network without unnecessary delays."

This new e-book includes useful websites where anyone can purchase a computer directly, buy more memory, or even insure a computer you already own.

Dan also discusses the difference between a desktop computer and a notebook, and the various tradeoffs between them depending on what type of user you are, from a casual computer user to a serious online gamer.

Appleman is the president of Desaware Inc., a developer of add-on products and components for Microsoft Visual Studio. He is also the author of “Always Use Protection: A Teen’s Guide to Safe Computing” (May 2004; Apress; ISBN: 1-59059-326-X). The book, designed for the unique needs of teenager, covers all aspects of computer security from protecting computers from viruses, to protecting individual privacy and preventing identity theft, to safe online behavior.
