June 5, 2004 -- Conservative elite college professor wins nasty tenure battle; then runs for Massachusetts state Senate on platform of academic diversity.
James Miller, a lawyer and economics professor at the elite Smith College, describes his epic battle for tenure in the June 7, 2004 edition of Forbes Magazine. Smith, an all women’s Ivy League/Seven Sister College, initially denied Professor Miller tenure. However, Smith's five-person Grievance Committee unanimously ruled that two members of the economics department violated his academic freedom, and as a result he was allowed to come up for permanent status a second time. On the appeal, his department again voted to fire him. Smith’s Board of Trustees, however, overturned this decision and granted Professor Miller tenure. (Fortunately for me), “many professors are so comfortable in their disdain for the right that they don't even try to hide their political bigotry” stated Miller in this weeks Forbes’ article.
As a result of the national publicity his tenure battle brought, Professor Miller came to the attention of the Western Massachusetts Republican party and they persuaded him to run for the State Senate this fall. Miller is pushing for the State of Massachusetts to start a Minuteman Institute, at a State college in his district, to offer courses taught from a pro-American prospective. “Among my positions that some academics find disturbing: I support the war on terrorism, and I believe that markets are usually more effective than governments at organizing economic activities” explains Miller. “The Minuteman Institute I seek to create would in no way prevent left-wing professors from criticizing America.”
Rather, it would seek to ensure that students also hear arguments as to why America, capitalism and indeed Western civilization have greatly benefited mankind.
